Known locally as ‘The Seven Castles’, the Augustine priory of Kells is one of the largest and most impressive medieval monuments in Ireland. Situated alongside King’s River beside the village of Kells, about 15km south of Kilkenny city, one of its most striking features of the priory is a collection of medieval tower houses spaced at intervals along and within walls which enclose a site of just over 3 acres. Kells’. Wander around the ruin which has a church, a chapel, prior’s residence or sacristy and several domestic buildings.
The site is fully enclosed by the monastic wall, incorporating 7 towers and many defensive features.
